CISCO NETWORK ENGINEER

 

Title: Senior Network Analyst.  Experience with Cisco firewalls/routers and Palo Alto.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

With Cisco firewalls/routers and PaloAlto.

 

  • Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE) required or equivalent
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) preferred;
  • Linux System Administration
  • experience in Sun PRO, Telestaff, and Citrix also preferred.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Under administrative direction, the purpose of the position is to maintain server logs, perform backups and restoring of data, and assist with the overall maintenance of LAN/WAN systems. Position is responsible for diagnosing network hardware and software problems, and providing effective resolution in a manner that minimizes downtime for the network. The classification is distinguished from that of the Network Analyst level by the ability to manage projects, and by the greater complexity of assignments. Incumbents perform essential functions as outlined herein according to area of assignment. Performs related work as directed.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. Provides lead worker coordination and supervision to technical staff when applicable to functional area of assignment.
Installs, configures, and manages complex data networking and client/server systems and associated software as required.
Monitors computer network environment by supporting network administration and related support activities such as network security and software performance.
Performs configuration, maintenance and repair while ensuring that records of network performance, downtime equipment inventory and configurations are properly maintained.
Analyzes workflow processes and develops recommendations for improvements and solutions using automated systems.
Performs third level troubleshooting as required to support the Help Desk function; leads problem solving efforts applicable to area of expertise, which may involve other support staff.
Provides input to management on methods of improving the productivity, effectiveness, and efficiency of program operations.
Performs network backups and restoration of data; maintains logs concerning network activity.
Updates servers and LAN/WAN equipment; assists in developing specifications for new equipment requirements.
Installs new hardware, software and upgrades for various districts and departments utilizing network systems.
Provides instruction to end users in maintenance and use of network system and associated applications/hardware.
Identifies and provides resolution to software related issues through telephone contact or on-site visits as required.
Writes technical documentation outlining end user instructions; posts instructions and documentation for end user reference. Coordinates installation, maintenance, and repair activities with other support staff and vendors, when applicable to area of assignment.
Executes programs, as applicable, when assigned to a specific functional area, i.e., payroll processing, running high volume reports, data back-ups, file maintenance, system security.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.
Performs related duties as directed.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Associates degree with coursework in network systems installations, maintenance, diagnostics and repair, or closely related field; supplemented by three (3) years journey level skilled experience in installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of local and wide area network systems, with experience in addressing complex hardware and software problems in networking environments, with the ability to provide end user support and instruction applicable to area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks involve the intermittent performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). May require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects. Work requires the intermittent installation, moving, and modification to voice system equipment and peripheral components. Due to the varying nature and locations of the work environment, tasks include potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements consistent with electronics installations and wiring systems. Some tasks include materials handling where physical risks are predictable and/or controllable by observance of standard safety precautions.
