Role - Network Engineer

Location - Chesapeake, VA...............100% Onsite at City of Chesapeake – travel to other City locations around Chesapeake, VA.  Maybe some remote work down the line

They are moving from Aruba/HP to Cisco
Will be auditing closets
Assessing power concerns
Config/deploying switches
Run cable/installs
 
The role will initially focus mainly on switching installations and ticket management, while also requiring the knowledge to transition into NE2 responsibilities.

For clarity, the following is my definition of the NE1, NE2 levels as they currently exist in the city’s Network Communications Team:

  • NE1:Should have a solid understanding of L2 switching (i.e. fully understand VLANs, tagging, trunking, AAA, Spanning Tree, etc.) and a foundational knowledge of L3 networking, including subnetting (IPv4 public vs private class A, B, & C subnets), familiarity with routing protocols like OSPF and EIGRP, a basic grasp of Wi-Fi, and a strong understanding of switch installation best practices (i.e. proper network cabling, power considerations, etc).

 

  • NE2:Should have an in-depth understanding of L2 switching and a strong understanding of L3 through 7 networking, routing protocols (OSPF, EIGRP), firewalls, Wi-Fi, and Network Access Control (NAC – for example ISE and/or CPPM). They should also have a basic understanding of more complex topics like VRFs, BGP, and MPLS.

The Network Engineer will have the following minimal qualifications:

  • 2 to 4 years experience relating to network communications engineering of large enterprise systems with a specialty in at least two of the following arenas: core, LAN and WAN support, ISP engagement, VoIP and WiFi infrastructure, networking infrastructure, Firewall management, and fiber connections.
  • 2 to 4 years experience of IT operations technical support services.
  • 2 to 4 years experience of network engineering applications and the life-cycle management with a demonstrated ability and skill to analyze, evaluate, and resolve complex problems.
  • Strong experience with the following technologies:
  • Layer 2 switching
  • Routers and Routing methodologies
  • Wireless Communications
  • VoIP systems
  • Firewalls
  • ISP connections and management
  • Fiber connections
  • 1 to 3 years experience within a complex, multi-vendor, matrixed IT environment.
  • 1 to 3 years experience of IT cross-functional awareness and how IT platforms support functional business needs.
  • 3 to 5 years experience bringing new infrastructure platforms to fruition from concept to implementation.
  • College Degree in IT field and 4+ years overall IT experience, or 8+ years of overall IT experience without.
